Bibi lei : BLOOMBAYA
Vibrant colors better presented in person than these pictures. Struggling with the texture of the paint initially cause I’m not always into the goopy-ness. Thinking about it more I love how the broader surfaces of wide faces on gigantic heads are more matte and chalky
Things I love, too:
Simple twisted gestures for mouths
Dayglo outlines
Legs swirling upward and flat.
Slinky and slunky slouching figures like little kids with a range of expressions from frustration to wonder in their faces. The field of flowers or clouds surrounding the figures expand and swallow the figures as I continue to look around the space. It reminds me of a way more colorful field of vision that happens under the eyelids when you rub at your eyes for a long time.
I can feel the small sweat droplets under my mesh shirt in front of one of the only two pieces containing just one character. It’s right across from the other. More imminent sense of crowding in these.
I’m not sure if it’s indignance or confidence or what but these kids have attitude.
A rainbow pond sparkling and stretched out cascades over two intermingling figures. Cheeks vibrate with the same electric magenta in the clouds and the border of this pond.
And then I went back to the front of the gallery to leave and realized this other area I initially thought was a pond could actually be a stomach. Like Dana Schutz-esque but more scrubby and loose with the mark making.
It is the most adorable character to me next to the one really angry looking figure like it is in it’s terrible 2’s, and the one flattened at the bottom of a large square painting— either asleep or defeated.
